  A global picture .

In 2004, over 1 billion people globally were without access to improved water supply (which amounts to 1 human being out of 6). Nearly two thirds live in Asia.

2.6 billion people are without access to improved sanitation (half the developing world) .

Giving access to water supply and sanitation for all people is a race against demographic growth...

The world population increases at a rate of some 211'000 more people each day.

This is a challenge to achieving universal coverage.

Not only must one cope with all those who currently don't have access to water supply and sanitation but on top of it, one must keep up with a huge demographic growth.

The challenge is enormous, but can be met.

World population
After growing very slowly for most of human history, the world’s population more than doubled in the last half century and reached 6 billion in late 1999.
World population will probably grow by 50 per cent, from 6.1 billion today to 9.3 billion, by the year 2050, with the greatest increase in urban areas.
