Eastern Asia has seen important progress in terms of percentage of population served: the regional coverage increasing by some 21%. This amounts to 332 million more people that have gained access to improved sanitation during the 90's, half of them in rural areas (+ 169 million).

Urbanization in this region is important with 212 million more people in 2004 than in 1990; the rural population decreasing by some 50 million.
