Southern Asia has seen good progress in terms of percentage of population served: the coverage increasing by some 18%. This amounts to 332 million more people that have gained access to improved sanitation between 1990 and 2004.
Progress has been made mainly in rural settings with 19% more people that have gained access to improved sanitation (+ 212 million). Urban areas have seen a 9% increase (+ 120 million).
