Western Asia has seen only slight progress in terms of percentage of population served at regional level (+ 3%) between 1990 and 2004. The coverage even slightly decreased in urban areas (- 1%) and improved by 4% in rural settings.

In this region, some 53 million more people who have gained access to improved sanitation during these 14 years.
