The developing countries are found in the regions of Africa, Asia, Latin America and Oceania as shown on the map to the right.

The population which has access to improved sanitation facilities has increased by 15% between 1990 and 2004, which amounts to about 1'143 million more people (623 million in urban areas and 520 million in rural settings) served in 14 years.
