If one takes a look at one region such as sub-Saharan Africa in 2004, the percentage of people served with improved water supply amounts to 49% of the total population.

 


These figures vary a lot from one country to another as the map on the left shows... but they also differ within each country: The situation is often much worse in rural areas, where coverage is on average only 36% compared with 82% coverage in urban areas.
