Since data was not always available for all the countries within a region, the regional figures you will find in the following pages represent an extrapolation to the whole region of the percentage found for the countries for which information is available of the total population of that region.
The sample size (proportion of the regional population on which the estimations are based) in 1990 and 2004 is on the whole very good, apart for Oceania and Eurasia (CIS) in 1990.
