Sub-Saharan Africa has seen a 5% progress in terms of percentage of population served with improved sanitation facilities between 1990 and 2004. Some 107 million more people gained access to sanitation, most of them in urban areas (+ 66 million).
An important demographic increase (+ 218 million) contributed to the lack of improvement of the percentage of people served.
